The Baofeng UV-5R series of dual band handheld radios are in the VHF/ UHF range. They also put out 5 watts of power which will increase your range. I usually get about 10 miles with the stock antenna, and about 20 to 25 miles with an aftermarket antenna like those available from ExpertPower.
